LIVER

Liver is one of the largest and most hardworking organs in our body. Apart from producing bile, liver fulfils at least 10 other functions, and one of the most important is the barrier function, i.e. cleansing blood from poisons, toxins, allergens, excessive hormones, vitamins, mediators, and toxic metabolic products.
Ayurveda considers liver to be an organ of Pitta Dosha. "Pitta" may be translated as "bile".

Overactive bile production, too concentrated and/or inspissated bile, blockade or obstruction of bile outflux through bile vessels – in most of the cases overactive Pitta Dosha is responsible for all of these conditions. Most of other liver diseases including contagious and inflammatory ones such as hepatitis and icterus are also often the result of overactive Pitta Dosha.

However in the modern world, especially in big cities, almost anybody's liver can be affected, not only belonging people of the constitutional types with leading Pitta Dosha. It is no wonder, if we take into account the abundance of factors causing liver overworking and ruining its health. Among these factors are:

1) Pollution of the body environment. As it was mentioned above, liver is responsible for blood cleansing. So any kind of body pollution affects liver:

· Unhealthy diet – too much red meat, alcohol, fried, oily, heavy or too sweet food, as well as amagenic food,

· Bad ecology,

· Taking allopathic medicines, especially in large quantities.

2) Emotional pollution – such emotions as anger, malice, aggression, irritation, offence, discontent. These "hot" emotions contributing to liver diseases are very representative for the modern society.

Thus we can see the core reason responsible for the burst of hepatitis cases, as well as other liver diseases, in the modern society.

Liver malfunctioning naturally manifests itself obstructing normal work of other organs and systems. The classical case in Ayurveda: blood pollution of Pitta type that is often caused by liver malfunctioning leads to all kinds of skin problems, that cannot be handled in other way than handling this liver malfunctioning.

Ayurveda offers the natural way of cleansing liver and restoring its normal functioning. In our Ayurvedic & Yoga Center we gained a lot of positive experience of handling such cases.

The best way to start with is PANCHAKARMA – the complex program aimed at effective body detoxification (which includes deeply accumulated toxins that cannot be handled at home) and restoring balance of the Doshas.

After that it is recommended to follow special course of actions at home to maintain the balance of your constitutional type. These course of actions is prescribed individually at the Ayurvedic consultation.

It is often recommended to take herbs, mostly bitter ones, that remove toxins from blood and liver, cleanse bile and make it not so dense, facilitates its proper outflow.

The best set of herbs is the following: Bhumi amalaki, katuka, guduchi taken in equal proportions. It is also good to add Brahmi that calms not only liver but also mind reducing desire to drink alcohol and eat greasy and sweet food.

Also, it is beneficial to take spices – curcuma and coriander + jeera (cumin), fennel, mint and lemon. They can be added into food or tea.

Chlorophyll that can be found in green leaves, especially in cilantro and such herbs as nettle and dandelion, is a wonderful remedy for liver cleansing. That's why it is highly recommended to make a salad with green leaves a part of your daily ration.

In most of the cases the diet reducing Pitta Dosha is prescribed with emphasis on raw food diet, i.e. a huge amount of raw, especially green vegetables. One should avoid sugars, oils and fats apart from ghee (clarified butter) and flaxseed oil that is especially recommended for liver detoxification.
